On Sunday, February 11th at 10 am, the New Mexico State Legislature’s House State Government, Indian, and Veteran’s Affairs Committee will hear three important memorials.
The first is House Memorial 53 (Rubio/Garcia-Richard), which would study ways to increase ecotourism on New Mexico’s state lands.
The second is House Memorial 81 (
Chasey/Garcia-Richard/Louis) , which would gather stakeholders together this year to discuss the need for a law like the National Environmental Policy Act which would apply to state lands and agencies in New Mexico. Unlike federal agencies, New Mexico’s state agencies have no requirement to notify the public about their proposals, or to consider the potential environmental impacts of their proposals before permitting. Eighteen other states have laws similar to NEPA at the state level.
The third is House Memorial 85 (Lente), which calls for protection of the Greater Chaco Landscape from rampant oil and gas production.
All three of these memorials are important and should be supported. If you can, attend the hearing in person and voice support for them! If you cannot attend in person, consider contacting members of the committee and asking them to support all three.
